WSEA 92 Assembly 2000
"Area Website" Failed Motion
Additional Information
A motion to have an Area 92 Website was initially presented at the July '99 Quarterly in Warfield, B.C., but was withdrawn so that this idea could be studied some more and the details associated with the motion be further developed. Background information on the withdrawn motion is given for historical purposes, providing a sense of perspective and continuity.
The Ad Hoc Website Committee formed at Warfield Quarterly submitted a revised motion at the April 2000 Quarterly in Moses Lake. This revised motion, when compared to that presented for consideration in 1999,
- suggests guidelines for the operation and maintenance of the Website,
- recommends that a new Area Committee be formed to oversee all Website activities, and
- presents options for the different types of information that will be allowed on the Website.
The Ad Hoc Committee then submitted the About the Area 92 Website Motion article published in the May 2000 Area Newsletter. This article discussed the motion carried at the April 2000 Quarterly and described supporting details accompanying the motion.
| Notes: |
The santized copy of the newsletter article given by the above link also contains links to the supporting details that accompanied the motion. At the time the article was submitted it was felt that a series of articles looking at the motion to have an Area Website would eventually be submitted, however this did not happen. |
During the preassembly workshops many objections and concerns to having a web site were stated. Responses to these concerns were formulated to help alleviate fears and correct inaccurate statements that were made. G.S.O.'s 'Ten Frequently Asked Questions About A.A. Web Sites,' service material dated April 1999, is also available for your review.
- We shouldn’t show affiliation with any outside enterprises or institutions: non-AA sites will show up along with the Area 92 site when a search is made for AA and Spokane. (Tradition 6)
- We don’t want personal information posted on the site. (Traditions 11 & 12)
- How is autonomy of the Groups, Districts, Central Offices and Intergroups going to be preserved? (Tradition 4)
- We don’t want to link to any outside enterprise or other people’s AA pages. (Tradition 6)
- We don’t want non-A.A. websites linking to the Area 92 Website.
- What about Areas that already have web sites, is there anything we can learn from them? Are there any problems that they have been experiencing?
- Having E-Mail contact to Area Officers on the web site is biased, what about those Area Officers that either do not have or do not want to use E-Mail?
- We will be creating a service position that can't be done by everyone.
- How can we expect to have a website when G.S.O. has hired a full-time employee?
- Not everyone has uses the Internet, is there enough benefit to justify spending the money to have an Area web site?
- We don’t want anyone changing the site that shouldn’t.
- We don’t want people displaying our site information from within their web pages (Framesets). (Tradition 6)
- How come we don't hear any negative things about the proposed web site, aren't there any issues?
